MALAWI - Dedicating the St. Mauritius secondary school
2023-11-20When it first formally opened in late 2022, the St. Mauritius secondary school served 200 students. The official dedication took place on November 19, 2023. Those present included not only students and teachers from St. Mauritius but also representatives of the ministry of education, Bishop Martin Mtumbuka from the Karonga diocese and Prof. Dr. Helmut Sitzmann (Rotary Club) and Uwe Bothur (Umckaloabo Foundation).
The dedication ceremony was definitely a cause for celebration, as the many pictures clearly show. One special moment was officially presenting the school:
Everyone came to the opening ceremony
Everyone was there: all of the teachers, a number of different official representatives, and of course the real stars of the show: the students!
Students performed a ceremony and...
... did ritual dances in their school uniforms!

The students have plenty to smile about. For over a year now they have benefited from attending St. Mauritius school and are happy to help celebrate.
A Scout troop has also been set up and coordinated under the guidance of Deodatius Muriya (left).
The students have plenty to celebrate: the school gives them a chance to shape their own future!
The pride of being part of the St. Mauritius school can be seen on his face.

200 students are enrolled here at the moment, and there are plans to include another 100 children. The Umckaloabo Foundation will take care of the two classrooms needed.
The Umckaloabo Foundation wants to create solid conditions for learning. This includes having buildings with enough space.
An issue of equal priority is being able to offer top-quality classes which reflect the students’ motivation and truly open up new prospects...
… such as the option of being able to start a good vocational education later on or even study at a university.
